nder the leadership of Muhammad Rudi, the Badan Pengusahaan Batam (BP Batam) is focusing on the development of infrastructure and superstructure that has strategic value. One of these developments is Batu Ampar Port, which has been operating for decades but which still utilizes conventional loading and unloading equipment that is inefficient by today’s standards.

To commence the transformation of Batu Ampar Port, a multi-stage development process was required. Starting with the autogate system that was established in January of 2022, BP Batam continued on to the next stage by developing suprastructure with the addition of a ship to shore (STS) crane in the fiscal year of 2022.

The STS crane, produced by Korin Corporation, arrived in Batu Ampar on April 8, shipped from Pohang in South Korea, aboard the Dongbang Giant No 1 ship.

The improvement acquired by adding the STS crane is a significant reduction in the port dwell time. Beforehand, the unloading of containers from ships at Batu Ampar Port took around one hour, and it was only possible to move around four to eight containers. But with the use of the STS crane, the time it takes to move one container is less than two minutes, resulting in over 35 containers being moved per hour.

The STS crane is also a manifestation of BP Batam’s efforts to transform Batu Ampar Port into a green port. This is because the new crane uses electricity, an imperative upgrade to the previous conventional diesel crane that produced pollution.

.

The development of Batu Ampar Port’s infrastructure and suprastructure is expected to increase the volume of loading and unloading from 528,093 TEUs in 2021 to around 770,000 by 2025 and 1.6 million TEUs by 2028. To achieve said targets, BP Batam has established partnerships with local Batam companies to add more tools and expand the container yard up to Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) standards, which is 8.7 hectares by 2025 and 20 ha by 2028.

Muhammad Rudi states that BP Batam wishes to make Batu Ampar Port the premier modern logistic hub for Indonesia in the near future. And for that to happen, he stresses that a strategic plan that involves investment partnerships will be needed. Outside of bringing in the STS crane and expanding the container yard, BP Batam’s strategic plan will have the company develop the next stages of the harbour, adding four quay container crane (QCC) suprastructure units, 20 head truck units, 10 rubber-tired gantry crane (RTGC) units, two reach stacker units and a variety of other support facilities.
