or many of us, the projector occupies the usual spots in its usual haunts: the office for that weekly meeting; at school for group presentations; and the cinema for the latest blockbusters.
At home, a projector can seem out of place, given our familiarity with its usual settings. In its place, we have the television, which has entertained families worldwide through late-night gaming sessions, primetime dramas and Sunday morning cartoons.
Of course, the projector and the television each have their own markets, serving different wants and needs. But what if there is a projector that can both work hard, and play even harder?
Enter the Epson EH-TW6250.
What is it?
Positioned as Epson’s 4K-equipped entry level model, the EH-TW6250 brings a crisp home theater experience featuring proprietary 4K PRO-UHD technology, designed to perform even in small and limited spaces by delivering 2,800 lumens.
The standard size for the screen is over 120 inches, but the projector is capable of displaying images up to 500 inches, which can also serve larger events should the need arise. In addition, the projector comes equipped with Android TV and Chromecast, allowing viewers to directly stream internet-based content from YouTube, Netflix and other platforms for further versatility.
In terms of audio options, the EH-TW6250 features an integrated 10 W bass-reflex speaker along with Bluetooth wireless audio device support for connecting soundbars or headphones. With a sleek yet compact design and vertical lens shift, the projector can be placed virtually anywhere, including tables and bookshelves, for flexible setup and easy viewing.
Performance
One of the main features of the EH-TW6250 is the true 3-chip 3LCD technology, which reproduces images by combining primary (RGB) colors that are fully processed by the prism inside the projector.
Epson claims the technology offers three times the brightness compared to a 1-chip DLP projector by producing an equally high white and color light output, while also at the same time eliminating the so-called rainbow effect that causes fatigue in your eyes.
In an outdoor film screening session, the projector displayed sufficient brightness and color accuracy without compromising the overall contrast, ensuring deep blacks and vivid colors. The same goes for an indoor setting, where saturation and contrast are kept at an optimal balance even when the projection is displayed on a wall instead of a dedicated screen.
Still, the EH-TW6250, though still capable of regular daytime office settings, works best under low light conditions. Vivid colors come across adequately, but darker tones require you to turn down the lights and close down the blinds for a more optimal result.
The frame interpolation support also helps provide smooth images with less blurring, though unfortunately the feature is not available for 4K resolution.
Gaming is one of the uses most touted by Epson, and the EH-TW6250 does not disappoint. With an input lag time of under 20 ms, the projector keeps up with the action smoothly with no noticeable lagging in casual games, but rather struggles with higher end console and PC titles.
In addition, the lamps are rated for a lifetime of up to 4,500 hours in standard mode and 7,500 hours on Eco mode, which when in combination with Epson reliability, makes for a very good preposition.
Verdict
With its rather premium price point compared, the Epson EH-TW6250 occupies a different market than TVs in general. As a standalone projector and not a TV replacement, however, Epson’s latest offering is probably a good contender for its allrounder aspect.
