IEE Series 2023 held to drive national economic growth

A

t least 34,000 trade visitors are expected to attend the Indonesia Energy & Engineering Series 2023 (IEE Series 2023), a platform to spur national economic growth, to be held at JIExpo in Kemayoran, Jakarta, from Sept. 13 to 16.

This year’s IEE Series 2023, dubbed the largest gathering in Southeast Asia, will cover eight sectors, electricity and power (Electric and Power Indonesia), oil and gas (Oil and Gas Indonesia), mining (Mining Indonesia), construction (Construction Indonesia), concrete and building technology (Concrete Show Indonesia), water and waste management (Water Indonesia) and casting, foundry and metallurgy technology (GIFA Indonesia and METEC Indonesia).

The four-day IEE Series 2023 raises the theme, Toward Sustainability to underscore the importance of implementing sustainability values and responsible practices in Indonesia, specifically across various national industrial sectors.

More than 2,100 companies from 36 countries are expected to participated in the event, which will feature combined exhibitions, business matching activities and a mix of online and in-person seminars covering various engaging topics from different industries.

Lia Indriasari, event director of IEE 2023 from PT Pamerindo Indonesia, which is organizing the event, pointed out, “Sustainability has grown significantly in recent years, and the industrial sector plays a crucial role in achieving the sustainable goals.”

“'Sustainability' does not only look at one side, namely the impact on the environment, but also sees how the sector can align its contribution to the national economy and also create a business climate that is in line with the sustainable concept,” said Lia during a press conference in Jakarta on Aug. 22 in conjunction with the planned IEE Series 2023.

She went on to say, “By promoting and bringing light to sustainability efforts within the industrial sector, we can collectively work toward creating a better future, where businesses can thrive while minimizing their impact on the environment and empowering local communities.”

“We believe that through the collective works, the industrial sector can make a positive impact to the environment, society and the future," she said.

Setting it apart from previous similar events, this year's IEE Series 2023 also includes special co-located events: GIFA Indonesia and METEC Indonesia which are jointly organized with Messe Düsseldorf Asia, thus bringing the focus to the foundry, metal processing and metallurgy market in Indonesia.

GIFA and METEC Indonesia, part of the Metallurgy and Foundry Technologies portfolio of the Messe Düsseldorf group, is expanding its reach through satellite events, establishing crucial marketplaces across various regions worldwide.

With the spotlight on growth markets, including in Asia where the demand for industry investment and infrastructure development is substantial, the positioning and timing of GIFA and METEC Indonesia could not be more opportune.

GIFA and METEC Indonesia also comes against the backdrop of the government’s work-plan for 2024, which aims to foster the nation’s economic resilience and enhance existing infrastructure and promote digital transformation among others.

Innovation and collaboration

Messe Düsseldorf Asia managing director Gernot Ringling said, “Indonesia plays a pivotal role in the Southeast Asian market and is projected to become one of the world’s seven largest economies by 2030 and to enter the top five by 2050. Given that Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of commodities such as nickel, tin, coal and bauxite – the foundry, casting, and metallurgy sectors play a vital role.”

“As Southeast Asia's economies, including Indonesia's, continue to advance, the demand for infrastructure, automotive components, electronics products and manufacturing is growing substantially. This surge is expected to fuel a robust market demand for metal parts, metal processing, casting and foundry technology,” he said.

“In the spirit of cooperation, as international trade fair organizers Messe Düsseldorf Asia and Informal Markets continue to champion innovation, growth and collaboration.”

“We remain steadfast to our commitment to the region and in fostering professional trading and networking platforms that create mutual benefits: events that fuel the growth of national industries, propel the market growth of our target markets and present our customers with newfound business prospects. We look forward to a successful partnership and continued cooperation.”

The IEE Series 2023 that serves as a dynamic hub for interaction and networking will indirectly foster connections, collaborations and innovations that will have a positive impact on both the industrial sector's sustainability and its values.

According to the Indonesian Oil and Gas Association (Aspermigas) secretary-general Elan Biantoro, while efforts continue to accelerate the transition from fossil-based fuel such as oil and gas to new and renewable energy sources to pursue net-zero emissions by 2060, Indonesia is also striving to boost its oil and gas output to meet the rising demand for energy, mostly utilized to fuel electricity plants.

“Currently, more than 60 percent of energy is supplied by the oil and gas sector. Efforts are underway to attract big oil companies to jointly boost our oil and gas production under mutually beneficial scheme,” he said in the industry insight session, adding, “So, the upcoming expo will provide us with an opportunity to address the issue and to attract investments.”

PT Sany Heavy Industry Indonesia, as a platinum sponsor of the Mining Indonesia and Construction Indonesia exhibitions, also emphasized that the heavy equipment and construction industries could not grow in isolation but had to collaborate with other sectors to create a better outlook in the future.

Indonesian National Construction Association (GAPENSI) secretary-general Andi Rukman Nurdin Karumpa said, "As we know, the government is focusing this year’s state budget on accelerating the completion of national infrastructure projects and promoting the growth of new economic centers, including new capital city.

“As the sector most closely related to national infrastructure development and the third-largest economic source in Indonesia, our presence at the IEE Series 2023, along with other sectors, can stimulate local and international industrial players to initiate trade or collaboration for stakeholders, importers, distributors and especially decisionmakers in this industry."

Referring to the Group of 20 events in Bali in 2022, in which Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability, the IEE Series sees the implementation of several sustainability practices through its commitment to supporting carbon offset programs, promoting the use of reusable materials for exhibition stands and collaborating with Ecoloop to process the exhibitions’ waste.

State-owned electricity company, PT PLN Nusantara Power Corporate Secretary Sri Heny Purwanti was of the view that with the convergence of all stakeholders within their respective associations at the IEE 2023, “we have the opportunity to discuss novel policies that can be implemented across various Indonesian industries in the future. This is especially relevant for guiding the electric and power sector toward greater sustainability."

Prakarsa Jaringan Cerdas Indonesia or Smart Grid Indonesia Initiatives (PJCI) founder Eddie Widiono said, "Prompt recognition of the mission to achieve SDGs in Indonesia is essential. Hence, gleaning insights from every business line and industry participating in IEE Series 2023 holds paramount significance," he affirmed.
