jen Geopark is set to receive official recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) during the 10th International UGG Conference in Marrakech, Morocco, taking place from Sept. 7-9.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani has received an invitation to attend this prestigious event, which will bring together over 195 geoparks from 48 countries around the globe.

"We will actively participate in the process of designating Ijen Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This is a significant moment to showcase Banyuwangi's natural beauty, tourism offerings, and cultural heritage on the global stage," Ipuk stated during the conference on Thursday.

"The UNESCO Global Geopark status for Ijen Geopark will enhance it’s international recognition and encourage more tourists to explore Banyuwangi. This, in turn, will boost our economy and create new employment opportunities,"she added.

Ijen Geopark stands out as a distinctive geological park, celebrated not only for its natural wonders and cultural richness but also for its commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

"The abundant natural blessings found in Banyuwangi, with its exceptional landscapes and cultural diversity, will remain protected. We will manage them while striving to enhance the well-being of our community," Ipuk explained.

To achieve this goal, Ipuk highlighted the significance of sustainable tourism, emphasizing the dual focus on environmental preservation and safeguarding cultural heritage.

"Tourism is a primary means of involving the community in conservation and cultural preservation efforts," she said.

Ipuk also mentioned that this international event presents an excellent opportunity to forge international partnerships, including the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with various UGG managers worldwide. Notable partners include UGG Langkawi (Malaysia), UGG Aso (Japan) and UGG M'Goun (Morocco).

"These partnerships will facilitate knowledge exchange, research collaboration and more. They will propel UGG Ijen to even greater heights in the future," Ipuk added with enthusiasm.

Ipuk further noted that UGG Ijen has always held a distinctive allure. Beyond the renowned blue flames in Mount Ijen's crater, it is an integral part of Gondwana land, a fragment of the Australian plate.

"These natural attributes contribute significantly to the remarkable richness of flora and fauna in Banyuwangi. It is deserving of recognition as a natural laboratory for researchers," she concluded.
