ertamina formally launched the Sustainability Academy and Asia’s first Sustainability Center for the scale of oil and gas companies in the Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF) in Park Hyatt Hotel, Jakarta on Thursday. The launch was carried out by Pertamina president director and CEO Nicke Widyawati with State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry Secretary Rabin Indrajad Hattari.
Nicke said the launch of the Sustainability Academy and Sustainability Center was a symbol of Pertamina’s commitment in its efforts to prepare human resources sustainably in welcoming the energy-transition era in Indonesia.
“Recently, we launched Pertamina’s Sustainability Academy because one of our biggest challenges is preparing human resources, which include the community, to better understand sustainability programs. Without the involvement of all parties, the NZE [net-zero emissions] 2060 target will be difficult to achieve,” said Nicke.
Nicke added that Pertamina had taken the initiative by conducting business and organizational transformations, and now it was time for Pertamina to make greater contributions in preparing talent for the energy transition to achieve NZE 2060.
“The expectation is that the Pertamina Sustainability Academy can raise awareness that in realizing sustainable energy, we all need to have the same understanding,” said Nicke.
According to Nicke, achieving NZE has to start individually. Each individual in society has to take part. Through the Pertamina Sustainability Academy, Pertamina starts internally first by providing Pertamina employees with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability.
“We also begin cooperation with universities abroad including companies or partners who work together with Pertamina. We're open to gaining knowledge together at the Pertamina Sustainability Academy,” says Nicke.
Gradually, added Nicke, the government, ministry, education institutions and all elements of society can draw knowledge together, because this is our task together in achieving NZE in 2060.
In achieving NZE 2060, Nicke said Pertamina’s most important strategy is how we build our own sustainable energy. Sustainable meaning all materials and raw materials are owned by Indonesia, there must be a supply and then we can have the ability to process it into better energy.
“In the past few years Pertamina has been pushing for a palm oil-based biodiesel program. Indonesia is one of the biggest palm oil producers in the world. So, we believe that biodiesel is a sustainable energy that is suitable for Indonesia,” says Nicke.
Rabin said that the government was pushing SOEs like Pertamina to develop second- and third-generation biofuel.
“A good example here is something Pertamina has been developing since 2021. Pertamina has developed the second generation of biofuel, which comes from empty fruit bunches. This research was carried out by Pertamina Subholding Refining and Petrochem PT Kilang Pertamina International and has been successful, it is hoped that in two-to-three years it can be marketed,” said Rabin.
Pertamina, added Rabin, has also been searching for more advanced third-generation biofuels using LNG. This is a more advanced matter and will take more time and is still under consideration, requiring more research to be conducted.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the field of energy transition, is committed to supporting the NZE 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies across all of Pertamina's business lines and operations. *
