Pertamina develops carbon capture and storage technology to achieve NZE 2060 Way forward: Pertamina president director and CEO Nicke Widyawati is the keynote speaker at the International & Indonesia CCS FORUM 2023 event. With the theme “Pioneering The Energy Landscape Decarbonization Future: Harnessing the Power of CCS Globally for a Cleaner Future and Economic Growth” it was held in Hotel Mulia, Jakarta on Monday.

P

ertamina continues to develop carbon capture and storage technology, also known as carbon capture storage/carbon capture utilization and storage (CCS/CCUS) to support the government in achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. The implementation of CCS/CCUS in Indonesia is believed to support greater oil and gas production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This was revealed by Pertamina president director and CEO Nicke Widyawati when she spoke at the International & Indonesia Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Forum 2023, which focused on the theme "Pioneering the Energy Landscape Decarbonization Future: Harnessing the Power of CCS Globally for a Cleaner Future and Economic Growth," held in Jakarta on Monday.

On this occasion, Pertamina also signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with several relevant parties regarding the implementation of CCS/CCUS technology. Among these were PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga-Sanga and PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan, collaborating with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Chevron and Mitsui.

Nicke explained that, through CCUS utilities, Pertamina will play a role as a sustainable national energy supplier while providing carbon-reduction solutions and boosting the economy, along with other multiplier effects.

“Pertamina is prepared and committed to contributing to the country's efforts as outlined in our NZE road map. This road map is built upon three main strategic pillars: decarbonization of existing assets, the development of environmentally friendly energy businesses and carbon-negative initiatives such as CCUS and nature-based solutions [NBS]” said Nicke.

According to Nicke, Pertamina's active role in CCUS operations has been demonstrated through CO2 injection at the Pertamina EP  Field in Jatibarang,  West Java. The enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology that utilizes CO2 has had a positive impact on the reservoir. Furthermore, Pertamina will also carry out CO2-injection activities at the Sukowati Field in East Java to enhance oil and gas production.

Pertamina, continued Nicke, actively supports the government's important goal of becoming one of the CCS hub implementers in the ASEAN region. In addition, Indonesia's mission to develop CCS holds a promising future, given the abundance of natural resources such as oil, gas and coal, which indicate the presence of sedimentary basins suitable for CO2 storage throughout the country.

Various studies suggest that there is a potential storage capacity of up to 400 gigatonnes in these sedimentary basins. Indonesia’s geographical location is also considered advantageous for cross-border CO2 transportation, thereby supporting the development of a CCS hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Nicke also stated that Pertamina is ready for collaboration with various parties related to the development of CCS/CCUS.

“If needed, we are also ready to actively engage in future regulations and policies to create a more comprehensive CCS/CCUS ecosystem in Indonesia,” added Nicke.

On the same occasion, Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordinating Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, who was present virtually, mentioned that CCS/CCUS technology is already being implemented by countries worldwide in an effort to reduce emissions. According to Luhut, the development of a CCS hub in the homeland has significant potential, considering Indonesia's wealth of natural resources. Indonesia also has the potential for storage of up to 400 GT.

“Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, we can harness the full potential of CCS to create a sustainable future for Southeast Asia," explained Luhut.

Luhut also expressed appreciation to all parties who supported the organization of the event, including the signing of MoUs related to the development of CCS/CCUS.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the NZE 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies across all of Pertamina's business lines and operations.
