Pertamina ready to develop a sustainable energy research center in Nusantara

P

enajam Paser Utara, Sep. 22 - Pertamina has entered into a collaboration with the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) to establish the Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center in Nusantara in order to support the government's net-zero emissions (NZE) target and fulfill its commitment to the development of the new capital in Nusantara.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding between Pertamina and OIKN took place on Sep. 22. The signing was done by Pertamina president director Nicke Widyawati and OIKN head Bambang Susantono, and it was witnessed by President Joko Widodo and several ministers of his cabinet during the President's visit to Nusantara.

Nicke revealed that the development of the Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center would be located in the city’s Planning Zone 5, and it will comprise various facilities that include the Pertamina Sustainability Academy, Pertamina Training Institute, Pertamina Research and Innovation Center for Sustainable and Low Carbon Technologies, Pertamina Vocational Education Center, shared green infrastructure and laboratories, as well as the Sustainability Start-up Hub.

"The Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center is a step to support the government's NZE by 2060 program, by way of Pertamina developing a research center for green and low-carbon technology in Indonesia," she explained.

Nicke added that Pertamina would also develop the Nature-Ecosystem Based Solution (NEBS) project, which aims to harness the natural potential of Nusantara’s forested areas for conservation, restoration and sustainable ecosystem management throughout the capital region. By utilizing energy from these forests, the Nusantara area can contribute negative emissions and thus accelerate the progress to achieve Indonesia’s NZE target.

In addition to leveraging environmentally friendly technologies, Nicke further stated that Pertamina's program in Nusantara is also geared toward preparing professional workers in the green energy industry. "The Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center will be a research and education hub focused on developing the green energy, low-carbon, and renewable energy industries in collaboration with global companies and various universities worldwide," Nicke said.

Through these integrated facilities, Nicke also stated that Pertamina will prepare future generations able to create green-energy innovations and technologies to support Indonesia's target of achieving NZE by 2060.

"This is also one of Pertamina's contributions as a state-owned energy enterprise toward the realization of national energy self-sufficiency," she added.

Pertamina will also establish supporting facilities such as a community hub, including a conference hall, office and business buildings, hotels, community centers, hospitals and more during the project’s development phase.

As a leading company in the energy-transition sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the achievement of Indonesia’s NZE target by 2060 through continuously supporting programs that directly contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these efforts align with the implementation of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) principles throughout Pertamina's business and operations.
