he Whoosh high-speed train, which connects Jakarta to Bandung, was officially open to the public on Oct. 2 and is a result of the collaboration between China and Indonesia. With the Whoosh high-speed train, the journey between these two cities will only take 40 minutes, exponentially shorter than the previous approximate travel time of 3.5 hours by regular train and other ground transportation modes.
The Whoosh high-speed train project marks China's first high-speed rail project abroad, incorporating the same systems and the industrial supply chain from its own country. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train project also signifies Indonesia's official entry into the era of high-speed rail with a track that spans a total of 142.3 kilometers and a maximum operational speed of 350 kilometers per hour.
Spearheaded by China Railway Communications and Signaling Co. Ltd. (CRSC) and China Telecom, the optimization of the integrated network development for the Whoosh high-speed train is supported by development partner, Huawei. Providing support in real-time communication, control and train scheduling, this collaboration with Huawei also supplies reliable and robust technical support that can create intelligent, safe and efficient operations for the Whoosh high-speed train.
Communication networks play a crucial role in the operation of high-speed trains, hence CSRC chose Huawei as its partner for this significant project. During a test run of the train, vice president of Huawei Indonesia, Lai Chaosen, mentioned that Huawei has experience in building integrated communication networks for high-speed rail lines with best-in-class security, high bandwidth capacity and easy-to-maintain operating systems.
"Obviously, high-speed trains generally travel at high speeds and have short departure intervals. We must ensure that these trains operate safely, smoothly and efficiently. Huawei has solutions such as wireless train-to-ground signaling systems, signal transmission and data networks for high-speed trains. These solutions have been instrumental in building a reliable communication network for the operation of the Whoosh high-speed train," Lai Chaosen said.
"In addition to building an integrated network for trains, we are also collaborating with various telecommunications operators in Indonesia to enhance network coverage along the high-speed rail route, so that the public can enjoy more stable, faster and intelligent connections during their journey," he added.
According to Lai Chaosen, the wireless train-to-ground signaling system on the high-speed train network uses Huawei's proven and reliable interleaved architecture to provide strong, uninterrupted connections, which minimize communication failures. The network's reliability is concrete, with a connectivity rate exceeding 99.99 percent, ensuring the stability of the train’s control signal transmission and supporting the smart scheduling system based on the train’s and function numbers. It is also worth noting that the technology Huawei utilizes for the Whoosh high-speed train is exactly the same as that found in high-speed trains in China.
The data network of the Whoosh high-speed train uses the latest generation of DataCom devices that are 100 percent physically damage-proof because of their innate hard pipe technology. The entire data network is protected by redundancy switching systems, ensuring that data exchange continues smoothly even in case of disruptions. The project is also equipped with high-speed train control system owned by China Railway, a system that ensures the safety, service quality and efficiency of the operation of the Whoosh high-speed train.
Lai Chaosen added that the signal transmission system of the Whoosh high-speed train is supported by Huawei's latest generation Hybrid MSTP devices, which can operate on large bandwidth systems and offer high stability for more than 20 systems. These include the high-speed train accident-response systems, video surveillance data transmission, power control and ticket sales. This solution can support the further development and evolution of Indonesian high-speed train businesses in the future.
