n response to the prolonged dry season and the occurrence of land fires in various areas of South Sumatra, Pertamina Group has collaborated with various parties to assist in mitigating forest and land fires in the province by deploying 206 certified firefighting personnel along with disaster relief equipment.

PT Pertamina (Persero) corporate communications vice president Fadjar Djoko Santoso said addressing forest and land fires was key to minimizing their spread and other related impacts, especially on public health and environmental sustainability.

"South Sumatra is one of the areas observed to have moderate to thick smoke. Therefore, we are promptly and proactively assisting in fighting forest and land fires at 44 points [in the province] to prevent further spread that could cause further negative consequences," Fadjar said.

Fadjar added that the response aligned with Pertamina Group's commitment to environmental preservation and prioritization of safety throughout all its operations.

Pertamina Group's internal synergy to help deal with the forest and land fire disaster in South Sumatra is carried out by several of its subsidiaries, including PT Pertamina Patra Niaga – Regional Sumbagsel; PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional – Refinery Unit III Plaju; PT Pertamina EP – Pendopo Field; PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan – Regional 1 Zona 4 Prabumulih; and PT Pertamina Gas Negara Tbk – Stasiun Pagardewa.

Pertamina's aid includes the provision of fire hoses, fire extinguishers, nozzles and fire pumps, as well as the deployment of 39 firefighting vehicles and 2 motorcycles.

Furthermore, Pertamina Patra Niaga Region Sumbagsel contributed 300 packages containing food, beverages, vitamin supplements and other dietary supplements for maintaining the firefighters’ endurance, as well as 100 pairs of firefighting safety glasses and respirators. These items were donated directly at the main post of the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s Climate Change and Forest Fire Control Agency (PPIKHL) in Sumatra.

"We will immediately distribute this assistance to the Manggala Agni team, which is currently at the forefront of combating forest and land fires," PPIKHL Sumatra Section Region III Head Candra Irfansyah stated.

Manggala Agni, which means "Commander of Fire", is a forest and land fire brigade under the Environment and Forestry Ministry that is responsible for fighting forest and land fires, including prevention, extinguishing and post-fire management.

Candra expressed his appreciation for Pertamina's efforts to support the Manggala Agni team, which is currently fighting against forest and land fires in South Sumatra.

Pertamina Regional Sumbagsel communications, relations and CSR area manager Tjahyo Nikho Indrawan emphasized Pertamina’s readiness to assist in handling forest and land fires, noting that collaborating to fight the current fires was a collective priority.

"The importance of synergy in facing the current emergency situation is crucial. We will continue to coordinate with relevant agencies, especially in the South Sumatra region. Together, we hope that the situation at the locations of forest and land fires will soon improve," Nikho said.

As a leading company in the energy transition field, Pertamina is committed to supporting the achievement of the net-zero emissions target by 2060 through continuously promoting programs that have a direct impact on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All those efforts align with the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles throughout Pertamina's business and operations.
