PTK develops clean energy-based waste management in Jambi's energy-independent village

P

T Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), and under Sub Holding Integrated Marine Logistics (SH IML), officially launched the Independent Energy Village Program in Tanjungsari Subdistrict, Jambi City, on Oct. 24, 2023.

The Village Energy Independence Program is a form of PTK’s corporate social responsibility and environmental responsibility (CSER) under the Pertamina Transko Care Environment pillar, which is a CSER program focused on environmental preservation. The Independent Energy Village in Jambi was previously a waste bank called Omah Sinau that was developed to provide more benefits to the surrounding community.

Before becoming an independent energy village, this waste bank for the past two years managed inorganic waste, primarily plastics and paper, turning them into various souvenir products such as children's toys and various other creative items. In 2023, they expanded their waste management system to include clean energy-based organic waste.

PTK Legal and Relations Vice President Sonny Mirath conveyed that the Independent Energy Village in Jambi is the first of its kind for both PTK and SH IML. Organic waste management in the Independent Energy Village includes three sustainable developments. First, organic waste is utilized as feed in Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Maggot Farming. Secondly, the Maggot farming is the main food source for catfish in a biofloc system. Thirdly, the entire operation of organic waste management utilizes solar power plants (SPP), a renewable clean energy source. These three developments complement the management of household waste into value-added products, such as aromatic candles from used cooking oil processing and vertical garden farming systems.

“Through this program, PTK contributes to reducing carbon emissions through energy transformation, providing access to renewable energy for local communities, including reducing both inorganic and organic household waste, allowing us to reduce waste at its source,” Sonny said.

In line with Sonny, PIS Stakeholder Manager Vega Pita said the program is an initiative aimed at providing access to renewable energy to the community, which is utilized for empowering local economic activities, with the primary goal of energy self-sufficiency and community economic empowerment. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and Pertamina's environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments.

The Independent Energy Village is the 64th of its kind within the Pertamina Group, contributing to raising community awareness about renewable energy through educational efforts conducted by the Pertamina Group.

Jambi Vice Mayor Maulana, who was also present at the event, highly appreciated the initiatives and efforts made by PTK. Maulana explained that PTK's efforts to provide access to renewable energy to the local community are the right steps to accelerate the transformation of energy toward a more sustainable direction.

“In the effort to accelerate the transformation to renewable energy, the government cannot act alone. It needs support from various parties, including both state-owned and private enterprises. We express our gratitude to PTK, and we hope that initiatives like this can also be undertaken by other companies,” he explained.
