s Pertamina's refining and petrochemical subholding, PT Pertamina International Refinery (KPI) is committed to implementing its corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER) through various programs, including one aimed at addressing limited access to irrigation for rain-fed agriculture.

The Kalijaran Energy Independent Village (DEB) program, which is based on integrated farming management using new and renewable energy (NRE) in the paddy fields of Kalijaran village, Maos district, Cilacap, West Java, was officially inaugurated on Nov. 2 by KPI president director Taufik Aditiyawarman alongside Pertamina vice president of CSR and SMEPP management Fajriyah Usman, Cilacap Agriculture Office head Susilan. The inauguration was also accompanied by the Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE) subholding.

Taufik explained during the event that Maos district is one of the “rice granaries” of Central Java with great potential to help Indonesia achieve self-sufficiency in food, especially in Central Java. "[The area’s problem spans] from limited land for rain-fed irrigation to the still-conventional farming system used [there]. However, Kalijaran has excellent potential. Therefore, we participate in [local efforts to achieve] economic independence through the Cilacap Refinery CSER program," he stated.

For Kalijaran village, KPI provided support by NRE-based economic empowerment in farming with the "Sustainable Farming Management Community" (MAPAN) CSER program worth more than Rp 270 million. "We hope Kalijaran will become a center for integrated organic farming and a reference for modern agricultural development based on NRE," he added.

Taufik further elaborated that KPI provides support with a 9,700 watt-peak (WP) solar power plant, which can increase the water flow rate for irrigation to 117,600 liters per day and produce 70 kilograms per day of organic fertilizer. "Furthermore, it will increase the harvest cycles from two times to three times per year, reduce the irrigation budget from Rp 1.5 million per hectare for fuel purchases to Rp 1 million per hectare, and increase agricultural production from 12 tonnes to 12 tonnes and 4 tonnes of chili per hectare per year," Taufik stated.

Another impact of this program’s enactment is that Kalijaran village is a pilot village for the NRE development in agriculture and serves as a community service site, including for the Politeknik Negeri Cilacap. "This innovation has a very positive impact on improving local farming output. It could therefore turn the Kalijaran village area into a DEB village that is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable," he explained.

The DEB program is Pertamina's flagship CSER program that focuses on the development of the NRE-based economy. Taufik added that the Kalijaran DEB also demonstrates KPI's commitment to fulfill environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles in an integrated manner as part of efforts to maintain environmental and societal sustainability, with a focus on achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 on clean and affordable energy.

"The programs we [Pertamina] design are always aligned with ESG aspects in the company's business strategy, and provide benefits to the public for their development and sustainability, as well as spreading knowledge with other people," he concluded.

KPI is a Pertamina subsidiary engaged in the key business of oil processing and petrochemicals in accordance with ESG principles. KPI is also registered with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and is committed to the UN apparatus as part of its operational strategy in implementing ESG principles. KPI will continue to conduct its business professionally to realize its vision of being a world-class oil refining and petrochemical firm with environmental awareness, social responsibility and good corporate governance.
