ndonesian coffee is internationally renowned for its taste and aroma, but having it served at a major international conference is certainly a new high.

From Yogyakarta all the way to Davos, Switzerland, coffee specialist micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) Space Roastery achieved a major milestone as it participated in the 2023 World Economic Forum (WEF) from Jan. 16 to 20.

Occupying a strategic spot at the Indonesian Pavilion, Space Roastery served delegates its signature beverages: the Halu Pink Banana Coffee, The Forbidden Fruit, as well as its take on the classic kopi susu gula aren (milky coffee with palm sugar) and cappuccino.

Space Roastery‘s story began with Wiliam Christiansen, a Business Computing graduate that fell in love with coffee early on in life. From this passion, William decided to study to become a home brewer.

Eventually in 2016, William, alongside his business partner Elvan Wenas, founded Space Roastery, a business offering quality coffee beans based in Yogyakarta. Initially based out of a garage within a house owned by William’s family, Space Roastery began its business by purchasing a coffee roasting machine.

During his journey in developing the business, William realized that the coffee market in Yogyakarta had vast potential, prompting him to utilize the digital business solutions provided by the GoTo ecosystem to increase the sales and strengthen the operations of Space Roastery.

Space Roastery started by joining the Tokopedia marketplace and establishing an official website, followed by joining the GoFood digital platform which allows its customers to purchase its products more easily through the Gojek app to further bolster sales and cover the operational costs.

Since joining GoFood, Space Roastery has put a sign above its location to increase visibility for GoFood drivers coming to fetch its products. However, this created a misunderstanding, as it led many customers to believe that Space Roastery was also a coffee shop that sold coffee drinks. Seeing this as a good opportunity, Space Roastery developed its business model by selling coffee beverages to its customers on location.

Space Roastery also has distinct differentiators that gives it an edge over its competitors, most notably through the packaging and naming of its products. Its signature beverages, the Gayo Apple Cider and the Halu Pink Banana, are especially favored by its customers.

Space Roastery’s decision to join the GoTo ecosystem led to a significant increase of 143 percent in sales for 2021, mainly attributed to the technological ecosystem solutions provided by GoTo, namely Tokopedia, Gofood & GoBiz and MOKA/Midtrans. Additionally, Space Roastery has been able to better absorb the workforce, employing over 60 employees and averaging 1 million cups of coffee sold monthly in 2022.

Due to its strong commitment to both Indonesian heritage products and innovative takes on coffee, Space Roastery was chosen as a representative of GoTo’s business partners to introduce and champion Indonesian products on a global stage.

GoTo’s integrated technological solutions enable sellers like Space Roastery to gain access to online advertising, product delivery, fulfillment centers and digital payments all in one ecosystem.

Understanding the need and demand of entrepreneurs to develop their own businesses, GoTo provides a one-stop-solution for beginner sellers to overcome the challenges they might face. These solutions include access to the official GoTo business partner website, the GoFood Partner Community, Tokopedia’s Seller Education center, A Cup of Moka and the GoTo Financial’s Retail Community.
