GoTo records new milestone, net-zero target validated by world-renowned SBTi

A

s the world adjusts to the new normal of the global boiling phase, the public and private sectors have to work together to reach their net-zero ambitions, a target set for 2060 by the Indonesian government.

GoTo has always been at the forefront of the fight, committing to emissions reduction with its initiatives over the years. Recently, the company announced that its near- and long-term greenhouse gas emissions-reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The SBTi is the world’s leading verification body for corporate emission-reduction targets, ensuring alignment with the latest climate science and with the Paris Agreement. This validation by the SBTi makes GoTo the first Indonesian publicly listed company to receive SBTi verification of its net-zero target.

The SBTi has determined that GoTo’s targets are in line with a 1.5-degree Celsius trajectory, a groundbreaking milestone for the company that has striven for sustainability as one of its core values. The validation by the verification body is yet another proof of GoTo’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions as an effort to mitigate climate change.

GoTo has previously outlined three of the targets; to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2050, to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 83 percent, and absolute scope 3 by 51 percent within a time frame of 2022 to 2030. Lastly, GoTo is also committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 95 percent, as well as absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 90 percent within the time frame of 2022 to 2050.

The three targets outlined are in line with the group’s Three Zero commitments, which are Zero Emissions, Zero Waste, and Zero Barriers. Moreover, it is also in line with the company’s ambition to transition to 100 percent renewable energy and utilize electric vehicles (EVs) throughout its ecosystem.

“The SBTi is the gold standard when it comes to ensuring companies’ net-zero targets are credible and verifiable. Achieving SBTi validation of our targets is a testament to our commitment and ongoing efforts toward decarbonization, and our dedication to integrate sustainability into the way that GoTo Group operates and grows,” said Tanah Sullivan, Group Head of Sustainability at GoTo Group.

Moving forward, she reiterated that the company will continue to focus on working closely with stakeholders to reduce the emissions footprint, especially in increasing the adoption of EVs and optimizing mobility across the company’s ecosystem.

“Despite the long road ahead of us, we are proud of achieving this milestone, and will continue to play our part in addressing climate change, while pushing for others in our ecosystem to do the same,” she continued.

The adoption of EVs has been successful for the company, noting an increase of 260 percent this year compared with 2022. It is revealed that over 18 million kilometers have been covered by two-wheel EVs since the GoRide Electric service was first introduced.

The transition to EVs was started through Electrum, a joint venture between GoTo Group and PT TBS Energi Utama established in 2021. Recently, the collaboration launched its first self-designed e-scooter model called the H5 this year, which was developed with local needs in mind and aimed at enabling more driver-partners to switch to an EV.

The SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
