aylor Hawkins, drummer of United States rock band Foo Fighters, has died aged 50, according to an official statement released by the band on Saturday.
The statement, which was posted in the band’s social media accounts, said that the band was “devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.” It also added that Taylor’s “musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.”
Hawkins joined Foo Fighters in 1997, after former drummer William Goldsmith parted ways with the band. Hawkins was previously best known as the drummer for alternative rocker Alanis Morrisette.
Noted for his highly spirited and skilful drumming abilities, Hawkins has been credited by band leader Dave Grohl as having brought the band to another level, which saw the band moving from its 90s alternative rock to a stadium-dominating sound. He managed to transcend what many thought was one of the hardest jobs in rock music - being the drummer for Foo Fighters, which was formed by Grohl, who played drums for Nirvana and is considered one of the best drummers in the world.
Foo Fighters are currently touring South America and had been scheduled to perform on Saturday night. No further announcements about the show have been made and no cause of death has been revealed.
