akarta Art House, a non-profit performing arts community, successfully brought one of the world’s most famous musicals to Jakarta. The group performed the Mamma Mia! for two days, starting on Dec. 22 at the Grand Theater Taman Ismail Marzuki.

Coinciding with National Mother's Day, the show incapsulates the unconditional love that is experienced through parenthood. In fact, the show was picked in order to celebrate all mothers on the special day.

The show amassed a large following, and 3,000 tickets were sold for two days of the romantic drama, which is accompanied by classic songs such as “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia” and “I Have a Dream.”

The musical version of Mamma Mia! follows the story of Sophie Sheridan, a fatherless girl, who desperately wants to find her dad before her wedding. After discovering an old diary of her mother, Donna Sheridan, Sophie decides to send out invites to her three potential fathers, who all accept the invitations.

The storyline depicts old haunts and new beginnings, as we learn that Sophie found closure, and Donna found the long-lost desire to fall in love again. Moreover, it also displays the special friendship between Donna and her two best friends, as well as the beautiful mother-daughter connection that Sophie and Donna have.

Apart from celebrating Indonesian mothers, Jakarta Art House as a community also wants to provide a platform for anyone to create art through the performing arts regardless of their background. Mamma Mia! not only consists of professional artists, but also of first-time cast members who have to perform in front of a live audience.

Regarding the performance, Aldy Inshagi, as the musical’s director, showed his pride over the progress of the cast members, who were able to put all their hearts into the production.

“During the preparation for Mamma Mia!, in this musical, we are invited to contemplate our relationships with our respective mothers. And to my mother, and all mothers out there, we love, respect and are grateful for all of your services. While playing Donna, I felt that not all parents are perfect, so, we as children also need to forgive the imperfections of our parents and ourselves and provide understanding and love for our parents,” added Ashley Hamel, who played Donna Sheridan.

The journey to the stage makes the hard work even more worthwhile for the entire cast and crew. The process started off with an online audition via social media, then offline auditions were held in June, and 278 actors were successfully welcomed into the production.

Apart from theatrical performances, Jakarta Art House also designs other Mother's Day activities such as Relung Rasa, a heartwarming activity that accommodates an intimate experience in the relationship between mother and child, or other loved ones, to express feelings of affection directly.

The profound and loving experiences, which involve going through questions written on cards provided by Jakarta Art House, will be published on social media, with the permission of the parties involved. The aim of this experience is to normalize deep heart-to-heart communication without shame. The Relung Rasa activities were held in conjunction with the performance on Dec. 22 at 4 p.m. and Dec. 23 at noon.

Previously, Jakarta Art House hosted interesting activities such a mini pop-up show in collaboration with Danjyo Hiyoji. The brand, started in 2009 by Dana Maulana, one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing streetwear labels, beloved by the younger generation.

Through the collaboration, Mamma Mia! appeared at the Fashion Nation event held at the Atrium Mall Senayan City in September. The exposure proved to be great for both the fashion brand and the show, as the presale ticket sales for the performance were completely sold out within one hour.

The second pop-up was held at the Indonesian Musical Festival at Lotte Shopping Avenue in October, as well as at a press conference that was held at the @America cultural center on Dec. 5, 2023.
