orth Sumatra Police have named eight suspects of human trafficking violations in the alleged fatal caging of people in the house of graft suspect and inactive Langkat regent Terbit Rencana Perangin-Angin.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Hadi Wahyudi said the eight were suspected of being caretakers of the iron-barred cells and were allegedly involved in caging activities that lead to the death of three victims.

Hadi said the inactive regent was not among the suspects. “However, we will continue our investigation. We’re sure we’re not stopping with these eight suspects,” the officer told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

The cages were discovered not long after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested the then-Langkat regent in January for allegedly demanding kickbacks from private contractors in exchange for infrastructure projects.

The KPK and North Sumatra Police found two iron-barred cages in Terbit’s house that held dozens of people who are thought to have been forced to work on his oil palm plantation and began a separate investigation into the matter.

Of the eight suspects, seven were named as suspects for violent deaths and two for human trafficking violations. “One of the suspects is implicated in two alleged crimes,” Hadi said.
