he Jakarta Police are investigating the alleged suicide of one of its middle officers, Adj. Sr. Comr. Buddy Alfrits Towoliu, who was found dead on the side of train tracks after he was thought to have jumped onto an oncoming train on Saturday.

Head of the East Jakarta Police, Sr. Comr. Leonardus Harapantua Simarmata, confirmed Buddy’s death on Saturday.

“The deceased, or the victim, was head of the East Jakarta Police Narcotics Investigation Directorate. He was 56 years old,” Leonardus said on Saturday, upon surveying the scene of Buddy’s death in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, as quoted by Kompas.id.

Buddy’s body was found on Saturday morning after a machinist of the Central Java-bound Tegal Bahari train filed a report that someone had been hit. A number of Buddy’s personal property was also found at the scene, including Buddy’s identification card, his phone and a wallet containing Rp 850,000 (US$57) in cash.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said Buddy was thought to have committed suicide by throwing himself on the train tracks.

Although the motive remains unclear Trunoyudo said it was thought to be connected with Buddy’s poor health, as he was suffering from a disease that impacted his gallbladder and was undergoing treatment before his death.

“[Buddy] had reported [his medical condition] to the head of the [East Jakarta] police. One or two weeks prior, [Buddy] had also undergone surgery, since [he claimed] that the pain was becoming unbearable. This will be part of our investigation,” Trunoyudo said, as quoted by Kompas.id.
