As Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo wraps up his term ahead of vacating his position on Sept. 5, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is expected to announce an interim successor later this week.
Jokowi was quoted by Antara as saying that he was still waiting for a recommendation from a team tasked with assessing candidates for the job and he is expected to get their names later this week.
"The names will reach my desk this week and once they arrive I will make the decision. So if you ask me today, then the answer is I don't know," Jokowi told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday.
The Central Java provincial legislative council (DPRD) has proposed three candidates as a replacement for Ganjar; head of the Attorney General's Office training center Tony Tribagus Spontana, Central Java regional secretary Sumarno and head of the National Family Planning Agency Hasto Wardoyo.
All political factions in the DPRD have agreed that the three officials meet the criteria of candidates who could implement the policies drafted by the outgoing governor.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has nominated Ganjar to be the party's presidential candidate to run in the 2024 election.
Ganjar will likely face off against Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan.
