With President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo conspicuous by his absence, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) matriarch Megawati Soekarnoputri announced on Wednesday her pick of running mate for presidential hopeful Ganjar Pranowo, in what analysts see as an attempt to reassert the party's independence from the President.

The vice-presidential nominee is Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD, who once served as Constitutional Court chief justice. He will run in the Feb. 14 poll when Ganjar is expected to face off against rivals Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra Party and former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan.

“Mahfud is the figure we have mandated to reform the national legal system because people want reform,” Megawati said at the event, which was attended by leaders of the PDI-P’s partners in the election, the Muslim-based United Development Party (PPP) and Hanura and Perindo, which do not have seats in the legislature.

President Jokowi, who is on overseas business, did not attend the announcement. Jokowi is a member of the PDI-P, the largest party in the government coalition, but has had a fraught relationship with Megawati as the two have become competing kingmakers for the upcoming race.

Jokowi has yet to publicly reveal his preferred candidate. He had on several occasions hinted that a “white-haired” presidential candidate, a reference to Ganjar, had his backing, but in recent months the President has also appeared to allow his erstwhile rival Prabowo to ride the incumbent’s coattails and rebrand his camp as “team Jokowi”.

Prabowo is expected to announce his running mate later this week. The retired army general is thought to be eyeing up Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka, especially after a recent controversial Constitutional Court ruling that paved the way for Gibran to run, and despite Gibran being a card-carrying member of the PDI-P.
