President Jokowi never asked for a term extension: Puan

Puan was responding to a comment from PDI-P lawmaker and former student activist Adian Napitupulu claiming that the current tension between President Jokowi and Megawati stemmed from her rejection of the President’s bid to serve beyond his two-term limit.

Indonesia Decides

Senior Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Puan Maharani asserted on Friday that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had never proposed extending his tenure in office beyond his second term to party chair Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Puan was responding to a comment from PDI-P lawmaker and former student activist Adian Napitupulu claiming that the current tension between President Jokowi and Megawati stemmed from her rejection of the President’s bid to serve beyond his two-term limit.

"No, never. As far as I know, there has never been a plan from him to have his term extended for a third term," Puan said, as quoted by Antara.

She said Jokowi and Megawati had never discussed the idea simply because there were no constitutional grounds for it.

"What would the mechanism be? What would that look like?" Puan said.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Adian claimed that Jokowi having his son run for the vice presidency on presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto’s ticket was his next best option, given that Megawati had, according to Adian, rebuffed his proposal to serve for another term.

"And then there's this request for him to serve for another term. Of course, we reject the proposal. This is a constitutional problem, this is the nation's problem, the people's problem, and we can't get behind it," Adian said.
