President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who is scheduled to return from a week-long visit to Central Java, will hold a meeting with outgoing Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Minister Mahfud MD on Thursday afternoon.
Mahfud issued a statement on Wednesday that he had decided to resign from the cabinet and would tender his resignation during a private meeting with the President.
"I really appreciate his decision [...] I will meet him this afternoon," President Jokowi told reporters on the sidelines of his visit to a wet market in Wonogiri, Central Java, on Thursday morning.
On Wednesday, Mahfud said in a live-streamed statement that he would hand over his resignation letter to Jokowi, once he had the chance to meet the President. He did not say why he would be stepping down.
"I will say my goodbye to the President with honor. I will report to him that I am done [with the job]," Mahfud said.
Mahfud is the running mate of former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo, who is up against ex-Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who is running with Jokowi's son and is the frontrunner in the race.
