The schools ministry is working on a plan to help teachers continue their education to receive associate and bachelor's degrees so that they can receive the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) certificate and making them eligible for an allowance.
he Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry is working on a mechanism to assist teachers in continuing their educations and receiving four-year associate (D-4) and bachelor’s degrees.
"The mechanism is still being designed. We will announce it later, and minister Abdul Mu'ti will provide the guidance," the ministry’s teachers and educational personnel director general Nunuk Suryani said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.
Although the details cannot be disclosed yet, Nunuk emphasized that supporting teachers in continuing their studies is a commitment from the government through the schools ministry. Ultimately, this can lead to improved welfare for the teachers.
This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto's previous statement that the government would assist teachers in continuing their education in 2025.
This effort is aimed at ensuring teachers meet the qualifications for the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) certification.
"Currently, there are still 249,623 teachers without associate or bachelor’s degree’s. Gradually, these teachers will receive educational assistance to continue their studies to the associate and bachelor’s levels," Prabowo said on National Teacher's Day on Nov. 28.
In addition, the government is also discussing providing direct financial assistance to non-civil servant teachers who have not received certification. The number of recipients is currently being calculated by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) to ensure that the aid reaches eligible and deserving teachers.
Prabowo also mentioned that the total budget for teacher welfare in 2025 will reach Rp 81.6 trillion (US$5.14 billion). This amount represents an increase of Rp 16.7 trillion.
This statement was later confirmed by Finance Ministry spokesman Deni Surjantoro, who assured that the increase in professional allowances would take effect in 2025.
Meanwhile, civil servant teachers who meet the PPG criteria in 2024 will receive professional certification and will then receive a professional allowance equivalent to one month's basic salary, based on their respective rank in 2025.
