The UK culture minister, Ed Vaizey, has warned that anyone doing so could be sued by the image owner for copyright infringement and could end up in prison.

The minister said that disclosing private photographs or films of a sexual nature without the consent of a person who appeared in them with the intention of causing distress was an offense that could result in a maximum sentence of two years in prison, the independent.co.uk reported.

Snapchat is an image messaging application created by former Stanford University students Evan Spiegel, Bobbie Murphy and Frank Reginald "Reggie" Brown IV. It allows users to take photos or videos known as "snaps". A snap can be sent to specific friends or to a story within a time limit. Once the time limit has passed, the snap disappears.

The app also has a feature that notifies the sender whenever someone saves or takes a screenshot of the snap.

Since its inception, the app has been perceived as a platform used for sexting, although Spiegel has denied this, according to TechCrunch. (kes)
