Beyoncé has once again become the center of the pop universe.
On her Formation Tour, which kicked off recently in Miami, the singer is selling official tour t-shirts with the slogan "Boycott Beyoncé" for US$45 each.
This is in reference to her Super Bowl half-time performance and the "Formation" music video, inspired by Black Lives Matter and the Black Panther movement.
The kerfuffle came about in response to a call from the Miami Fraternal Order of Police to boycott her concerts.
In a statement published by The Miami New Times, Miami Police chief Javier Ortiz said Beyoncé had used this year’s Super Bowl to divide Americans by promoting the Black Panthers and her anti-police message. These things revealed that she did not support law enforcement.
The singer responded to this accusation in a recent interview with Elle, saying, "Anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken. I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe."
"But let's be clear, I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things. If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me," she added. (kes)
