ollowing the press screening of Suicide Squad, most of the critics have been somewhat unimpressed by the movie. But there are actually several positive things about it that make the film worthy as entertainment.

The characters

The movie begins with backstories for each character that make viewers feel for them and connect with them, especially Deadshot, Harley and El Diablo. Throughout the movie, these characters connect with each other and become a team.

Unlike the earlier DC Comics' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, these different characters are not just brought together by their mothers having the same name, instead they realize that they are all just as human as the other; with sorrows, regrets and plenty of sins to atone for. The interaction between the characters also bring out the main theme of the movie, being honor among thieves. As much as these “villains” are the bad guys, by the end of the movie Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is much more savage than all of these villains combined.

The music

It is usually annoying when the music dictates the pace of a movie. Yet director David Ayer has done a great job of allowing the constant change in music to enhance the scene. Each change in the songs just seems to fit and draw the audience deeper into the characters.

As for the side note of the movie, unfortunately Jared Leto's The Joker was quite underwhelming plot-wise and the character's portrayal. Overall the performance was alright but definitely did not climb to the standards of Heath Ledger’s Agent of Chaos.

Another side note is the comic relief coming from Will Smith as Deadshot and Jai Courtney as Boomerang toward the rest of the team, it is appropriate and provides a few good laughs. The chemistry is there between the actors and actresses in this movie and the fact that they are all friends in real life creates the atmosphere of camaraderie that was missing in the dark and drab Batman v Superman.

Overall the movie meshed together well. Other than a few minor criticisms fans will look forward to more Suicide Squad films in the future. (kes)
