ctress Scarlett Johansson has been named the highest-grossing actor of 2016 by Forbes magazine with total earnings reaching US$1.2 billion.

The star of Captain America: Civil War and Coen Brothers’ Hail Caesar successfully dethroned Passengers' actor Chris Pratt who topped the list in 2015.

According to Antara news agency, Johansson’s co-stars in Captain America: Civil War, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., tied in second place with $1.15 billion each.

Released in May, Captain America: Civil War narrates a story of conflict among superheroes in the Marvel universe, which include Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Widow and Ant-Man. The film was also the highest-grossing movie of 2016 according to Boxofficemojo.com.

Meanwhile, trailing behind Evans and Downey Jr. is Australian actress Margot Robbie, who claimed fourth place with $1.1 billion following her role in Suicide Squad and The Legend of Tarzan.

The list itself is mainly filled with actors who have starred in superhero movies such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool. The new face on the chart is British actress Felicity Jones, who is in ninth spot with $805 million thanks to her role in the newly released Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Inferno and A Monster Calls. (wir/kes)
