T

he government is adding another Rp 30 trillion in stimulus spending as it rolls out the year’s fourth package of measures, which focuses on direct cash transfers and an expanded internship program in a bid to fuel household spending and job creation in the final quarter.

Coordinating Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto announced on Friday in Jakarta that the direct cash transfer (BLT) program from October to December would benefit 35.05 million families, more than its previous edition.

“This will reach around 140 million people if we assume that one family consists of four members,” Airlangga said.

The new cash aid comes on top of other social assistance provided through the Social Affairs Ministry including the Family Hope Program (PKH), which currently reaches 20.88 million families, and the food aid scheme that distributes staple goods.

Starting next week, 18.3 million new families will receive cash transfers via state-owned banks, while another 17.2 million families will receive theirs through PT Pos Indonesia, the state-owned postal service company.

The fourth-quarter stimulus totals Rp 46.2 trillion overall, comprising Rp 30 trillion in new funding and Rp 16.2 trillion in unspent aid from ongoing schemes.
