Crayola has announced that it will be retiring the “Dandelion” yellow from its catalogue and crayon boxes in order to make room for a new color.
Sadly, this is no April Fool’s joke.
Crayola has announced that it will be retiring the “Dandelion” yellow from its catalogue and crayon boxes in order to make room for a new color.
But Dandelion will not be removed without fanfare. There will be a public send-off in New York City’s Times Square.
A one-minute animation featuring the yellow crayon “Dandy” recalling his accomplishments was also posted on Crayola’s Twitter feed recently.

While some did not want to see it go—instead suggesting that Crayola retire its white crayon instead—Crayola caps its number of basic colors in circulation at 120, because all of its boxes of crayons come in multiples of 8. Dandelion is not the first color to go either. Since the company’s inception in 1885, they have retired 50 colors.

“Dandelion is both bright and light, like all shades of yellow are, but it seems to have a deeper cast to it than other shades of yellow in Crayola’s line-up,” said Stella Paul, author of Chromaphilia: The Story of Color in Art, to Quartz.
“In art, any yellow will generally call attention to itself—catching your eye because of its resolute lightness on a tonal scale of light to dark. Many great artists have brilliantly exploited that attribute of the color yellow, including Giotto, Turner and Gauguin.”
While the replacement color will not be announced until May, Crayola’s marketing head Melanie Bolden hinted that it would be a shade of blue. (sul/kes)
