3 streaming services to accompany 'mudik' travelers As the pioneer of online film rentals and a platform for original television series online, Netflix has amassed an extensive collection of entertainment material.  (AP/Elise Amendola)

For some, the annual Idul Fitri exodus could mean sitting for hours on end inside a car or a bus.

A six-hour drive from Jakarta to Yogyakarta could turn into a 24-hour journey, as traffic builds with the masses that are on the same mission as you - to arrive in time for the celebrations.

One way to beat boredom may require you to switch on your gadgets for online streaming services. Here are three, according to kompas.com

Netflix

As the pioneer of online film rentals and a platform for original television series online, Netflix has amassed an extensive collection of entertainment material.

With a different range of programming available in different countries, however, Indonesian audiences still fall behind US audiences selection-wise, Netflix having only penetrated the Southeast Asian country's market last year.

Nevertheless, Netflix is still ahead where it is available, as its original series have also gained popularity for their widely acclaimed quality, such as Stranger Things, Black Mirror, House of Cards and Terrace House

Hooq

Similar services followed after Netflix's introduction into Indonesia, with Singapore-based Hooq entering by bringing regional content to audiences.

The company streams film and television series from Indonesia, Thailand and Bollywood, in addition to those from Hollywood.

With the service cooperating with telecommunications operator Telkomsel, Hooq users can take advantage of data-friendly deals by activating the VideoMax package.

Up to seven gigabites (GB) is available in a package from the streaming service and an additional 12 GB for Rp 20,000 (US$1.51) is valid for 30 days.

Viu

Hong Kong-based Viu, meanwhile, especially targets lovers of Korean drama as the streaming service hosts an extensive collection from this genre.

Among others, the series available include Love in Trouble, She Was Pretty, City Hunter, Dr. Roman and Monster

Like Hooq, Viu is also working with Telkomsel, giving users access to data packages through VideoMax. (liz/asw)
