Barre exercises

Barre is among the new workouts available in Jakarta.

Inspired by classical ballet, the exercise is said to be the secret behind the toned bodies of Victoria's Secret Angels.

Ashley Verna, the founder of workout platform Define Founder, told The Evening Standard that ballet barre exercises would be a hit this year.

We couldn't agree more, as we spotted the exercise being offered by several studios, including bBarre, a boutique studio in Permata Hijau that specializes in barre exercises, and Soulbox at the Fairgrounds in SCBD, South Jakarta.

Verna said ballet barre workouts helped tone the body and improve flexibility, making it a must-try for those dreaming of becoming the next Adriana Lima.

Pound workouts

Avid users of Instagram may have noticed a new type of workout that uses drumsticks – and no, we're not talking about fried chicken.

Dubbed "Pound" and locally known as Pound Fit, the drumming-based exercise has recently become available at different workout studios in South Jakarta, such as Laca Studio and Active Barn.

Laca Studio co-founder/Zumba instructor Shanaz “Chacha” Nurimania said Pound Fit’s popularity started to rise at the end of 2017, and that fitness enthusiasts might find the workout different and interesting.

She added that Pound targeted the upper and lower body, and was particularly suitable for beginners.

“It's also a fun exercise,” said Chacha.

STRONG by Zumba

In addition to Pound, Chacha predicted that STRONG by Zumba, a trademarked workout program, would also become popular in 2018.

Unlike the usual Zumba, which highlights dance moves, STRONG by Zumba is a high-intensity, total body workout that syncs cardio and bodyweight exercises to music: It's exercise moves translated into movement and rhythm.

STRONG by Zumba is currently on offer at boutique studios across South Jakarta, including Soulbox and Sana Studio. (kes)
