T

ouring ice show Disney on Ice is featuring skilled figure skaters in the roles of Disney characters during its visit to Indonesia from April 18 to 22. Themed “Everyone’s Story”, the first show on Wednesday attracted a full house of spectators.

The show promised classic and modern stories performed by highly skilled skaters with vibrant choreography and settings, and that is what was delivered throughout the show.

Opening with a pre-show by Judy and Nick from Zootopia, the main premise was told by Goofy, Donald, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Disney's classic characters. With Goofy and Donald looking to make a movie, Mickey and Minnie suggest that they find inspiration from an array of Disney stories.

From then on, spectators are whizzed through time with tales of Pinocchio, Dory (Finding Dory), Woody and Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story), as well as princes and princesses from Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Cinderella and Aladdin.

On average, the characters performed for five to 10 minutes. The skaters’ skills were indeed incredible, showing jumps, the death spiral and the cantilever, in which the skater’s knees are bent and the back is bent backwards parallel to the ice, though with minor mishaps here and there.

The tale of Mulan was the second-longest of the evening in terms of run-time, followed by The Lion King, which started with majestic opening song “Circle of Life”. Overall, the show’s duration was nearly two hours, with a 15-minute intermission.

The biggest chunk of the show was dedicated to Frozen, which also got the biggest cheers, probably from the little Elsa’s and Anna’s in the crowd, all dressed up in their garbs. No less than four songs were performed in their full renditions, complete with settings of Arendelle kingdom and Elsa’s ice palace, symbolized with hydraulic stairs. Falling snow and Anna’s light-up jacket made the performance even more charming.

Perhaps that is the true enjoyment of Disney On Ice, which was first introduced in 1981 by Field Entertainment. Even if you are not a fan of Disney’s characters and stories, the skaters’ showmanship and intricate setups will fascinate you.
