Europe on Screen to return in May, visit six Indonesian cities

The annual film festival Europe on Screen is set to return on May 3 to 12 in six cities, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Denpasar.

he annual film festival Europe on Screen is set to return on May 3 to 12 in six cities, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Denpasar.

The festival is slated to screen 93 titles this year, including feature length and short films. One of them is Perfect Strangers (Perfetti Sconosciuti), an Italian comedy drama directed by Paolo Genovese, which won Best Screenplay at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival as well as Best Film and Best Screenplay at the 2016 David DiDonatello Awards. The film follows seven friends who decided to put their phones on the table and make all texts and calls public to prove that they have nothing to hide from one another.

Another gem is Armando Iannucci’s satire-comedy The Death of Stalin, which focuses on the period when the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin spent his last days and how it influenced the country. Featuring Steve Buscemi and Olga Kurylenko, the film received four awards at the 2017 British Independent Film Awards and won Best Comedy at the 2018 Empire Awards.

Other interesting films to watch are A Ciambra, Fathers & Daughters, Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge, Quit Staring at My Plate, Rock’n Roll and a surprise screening on May 11 at IFI Jakarta.

For documentary enthusiasts, the festival will also screen some flicks on its Realities program, including Bugs, Original Copy, Yohji Yamamoto: The Dressmaker, Dolphin Man and How to Change the World. The last two titles are part of Realities #Ourocean, a sub-section of the Realities program that discusses ocean and marine issues.

The screenings are open to the public and free of charge, but festival-goers may need to arrive early as the tickets will be available an hour prior to the screening.

Established since 1990 under the name European Film Festival, Europe on Screen mainly plays films from European Union countries as well as European countries that have representatives in Indonesia. (wir/kes)
