Ahead of its 2019 awards season, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced that it will implement diversity requirements.
he British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that it is formally putting diversity requirements into place ahead of its 2019 awards season, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Originally announced in 2016 in the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the requirements will affect two categories: Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
Anything entered in these categories must meet at least two of the four British Film Institute (BFI) Diversity Standards: on-screen representation, themes and narratives; project leadership and creative practitioners; industry access and opportunities; and opportunities for diversity in audience development.

The BFI Diversity Standards also work as a guidance policy for project funding that focuses on underrepresented groups in film and media. Three of Britain’s main movie funders, BFI, Film4 and BBC Films, have all agreed to the BFI Diversity Standards.
“I am immensely proud of BAFTA’s commitment to diversity across all its activities which support an open, accessible and inclusive industry," said Marc Samuelson, chair of BAFTA's film committee. "By embracing these standards for awards recognition, we can build on the work already being done to improve representation, whilst maintaining BAFTA’s standards of excellence for British film."
