Diabetes can be diagnosed during a general health checkup.
n 2013, 12 million Indonesians aged above 15 were suspected of having type 2 diabetes, according to a Indonesia Basic Health Research report by the Health Ministry.
However, kompas.com reported that only 26 percent of them realized they had the disease.
Rielya Pantouw, a physician at Klinik Diabetes Nusantara explained that type 2 diabetes is a condition when an excess of free fatty acids reduce the effectiveness of the insulin produced by the pancreas by causing cells to become insulin resistant.

Diabetes can be diagnosed during a general health checkup, and early detection is said to help control sugar levels and avoid complications, while uncontrolled diabetes can cause nerve damage.
Some of the common signs of diabetes include tiredness, thirst, excessive urination and blurred vision.
Those experiencing the symptoms are recommended to get diagnosed and adopt a healthy lifestyle. (jes/wng)
