It felt as if time had turned back to the '60s last Thursday night at Sahid Hotel, where senior models Rima Melati, Enny Soekamto and Sherly Parengkuan walked the stage in the elegant designs of fellow-model-cum-designer Sumi Hakim.

The now mothers and grandmother are willing to swing and sway on the catwalk again for a good cause; that is, to build a kindergarten for kids from poor families in Bintaro Sawah village, South Jakarta.

This rare occasion came as the senior models agreed to relive their modeling days for free in the Fashion, Dine and Dance event organized by Carita Education under the Baitul Ihsan Foundation.

Having been absent for years from the world of fashion shows, their strides, perfect swirls and poses showed they hadn't lost their touch in modeling.

"The senior models voluntarily participate in the fundraising to collect money for the school," event organizer Edowati Sudjono said.

Sumi exhibited her design of flowing, hand-painted silk and chiffon. Her blouses, with detailed beaded appliqu*s, were all painted by the designer herself. Wide sleeves left an impression of butterfly-like silhouettes.

The models walked elegantly. Different from the younger generation that struts like young mares on the catwalk, Rima, Enny and Sherly smoothly glided from one corner to another.

They held beautifully painted scarves with motifs of butterflies, floating them in the air as they twirled and walked.

There were 30 collections in the fashion show. The designer said all proceeds would go to building the school.

"I hand-painted all the dresses and every piece is unique. They are very exclusive," she said.

Her inspiration comes from her love of butterflies. "That is why I paint butterflies on my collection," Sumi said.

Baitul Ihsan Foundation head Titi Newoso said they needed some Rp 150 million (US$16,384) to build the school. "Up to now, we have collected Rp 40 million," she said.

Some 30 children have been studying in the house of a volunteer. "I hope they can have their own building to study in very soon," Titi said.

She added that they believed education in the early years of children's lives was integral to their development.

The event was closed with guests line-dancing on the dance floor. "It's one relaxing night for a good cause," Edowati said.
