Broken bridge causes congestion

JAKARTA: Several streets in Marunda, North Jakarta, have suffered from severe congestion after the Arteri Marunda Bridge was damaged last week.

The dysfunctional bridge, which is undergoing repairs, has diverted traffic to other access roads. Jl. Raya Cilincing, for example, was seen to have a traffic jam at least 3 kilometers long Monday, beritajakarta.com reported.

The Public Works Ministry is in charge of the bridge's repair. A contractor hired by the ministry has sent 15 workers to fix the bridge. The repair is estimated to take about two weeks after a concrete column supporting the middle of the bridge broke in two, an official said.

"We hope it will be finished within two weeks. It will take as much because we have to open up the bridge and to replace the column," said Ari Armada, the head of working committee for roads and bridges from the ministry.

He said many heavy-weight vehicles, such as freight trucks, used the bridge on a daily basis. The bridge is located near Tanjung Priok Port, the capital's main trading port. -- JP
