ATAM, Riau Islands: The Singaporean ambassador to Indonesia, Ashok Mirpuri, inaugurated the Singaporean Consulate in Batam on Tuesday.

The move is intended to enhance economic ties between both countries, especially in developing the Special Economic Zone in Batam, Bintan and Karimun.

The consulate is Singapore's second-largest consulate office in Indonesia after Pekanbaru in Riau.

The consulate office is located in the Sumatra promotion center building in Batam.

In his keynote speech, Mirpuri said leaders of both countries met in Batam to endorse the Batam, Bintan and Karimun Special Economic Zone, part of a new phase of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Singapore.

Economic cooperation in the free trade zone (FTZ) was one of the motives for the Singaporean government to establish a consulate in Batam.
