T

he Finance Ministry’s Tax Directorate General says it is closely examining the tax filings of the country’s wealthiest individuals.

Tax director general Bimo Wijayanto said on Thursday that several such individuals had been summoned after their filings were found to be in conflict with data held by the tax office.

“I have summoned high wealth individuals for consultations today. We have data that probably wasn’t well known [by the public],” Bimo was quoted as saying by Kontan.

Bimo said the tax office was now in possession of far more complete data than it did in the past, including the data on beneficial owners, which maps out the real person who ultimately owns, controls or benefits from an asset, company or transaction, even when the legal title is in someone else’s name.

The director general said taxpayers were not aware that the authority is in possession of this data so they did not include the taxable objects in their filings.

“There is a lot of extraordinary data for benchmarking taxpayer compliance now. Maybe sometimes they think we don’t have access to that data, that's why they don’t include it in their tax filings,” said Bimo.
