ndonesian shrimp is back on the menu in the United States after two containers of the food commodity were certified free of contamination by cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive isotope, upon their arrival earlier this week.

The shipment marks the first to pass inspection since exports were halted after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected Cs-137 in frozen shrimp and seafood products from Indonesia in early August.

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry confirmed that US authorities had “released” both containers following an inspection on Dec. 9.

“The first two containers to arrive with Cs-137-free certificates have entered and passed inspection, and have now been released,” Ishartini, the ministry’s quality control head, told a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

Between Oct. 31 and Dec. 10, the country shipped 640 containers of shrimp certified Cs-137-free by the ministry, which is the certifying authority for all US-bound shrimp.

“Hopefully, [all] 640 containers will [be processed] smoothly and no longer be subjected to additional inspections, because they now trust that Indonesia can conduct the [necessary] tests here,” Ishartini added.
