ATARAM: Dozens of laid-off employees of private television station Lombok TV, in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, have asked for the station's management to provide them with severance pay.

"We have been laid off since May 26 without any payment. The management said we were laid off because our contracts had expired," employees' representative I Made Putera said after a tripartite meeting with the management at Mataram Manpower Agency on Saturday.

"Since there was no extension of the contracts, we assumed we were permanent employees. So if the management decided to dismiss us, they have to give us severance payment," Made, who is also the TV station cameraman, said.

Made suspects the staff were laid off because the TV owner planned to lease the TV equipment to a national television broadcaster planning to open a local station in Mataram.

Separately, Lombok TV lawyer Ida Bagus Made Santhiadnya claimed the dispute with the employees was just a misunderstanding, saying the termination of the contracts was aimed to follow the 2002 Broadcasting Law.
