AKARTA: The National Education Ministry on Friday launched a book fair and discussions on various topics in recognition of World Book Day and National Book Day, which fell on March 5 and May 17, respectively.
"Although this event was held long after World Book Day and National Book Day, we still think it's important," Ria Kumara from the ministry's steering committee said, adding that the fair aimed to promote reading among the community.
Thirty-three publishers grouped under the Indonesian Book Publisher Association (PKBI) are also taking part in the two-day event at the ministry's office in Central Jakarta.
Text books, children's literature and classics such as Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are available at the fair.
Public libraries have also been invited to take part in the event, as well as the libraries of embassies and universities.
Friday saw two discussion sessions on the condition of public and school libraries in Indonesia.
