everal private investors have expressed interest in funding an extension of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway (HSR), Whoosh, to Surabaya in East Java, according to the Transportation Ministry.
“All of this is aimed at making it easier for people and goods to move across the region. We are currently evaluating the feasibility study,” Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana said at the International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) on Wednesday, as reported by Kompas.com.
Suntana said discussions were ongoing but declined to disclose the number or names of the potential investors.
He added that the ministry was still weighing route options to determine whether the new line would follow a northern or southern route across Java Island.

Whoosh only began operations of the Jakarta-Bandung route in October 2023, but plans to extend the line to Surabaya have been on the table for years.
The project is part of the National Railway Master Plan, as outlined in Transportation Ministry Decree No. 296/2020.
