he municipal administration is set to hold an art and cultural event dubbed "Denpasar Festival 2009" from Dec. 28 to 31, targeting to attract thousands of residents and tourists during the year-end festive season.
The annual event, previously known as Gajah Mada Town Festival, will take place around the Catur Muka monument (the capital's zero kilometer point), Jl. Gajah Mada, Jl. Veteran, Puputan Badung field, and surrounding streets.
Denpasar's Deputy Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Edi Mulia said the event is expected to revive the area as the center of business in the capital of Bali province.
"We also decided to change the event's name from *Gajah Mada Town Festival' to *Denpasar Festival' as a token of appreciation to our citizens, and to provide greater opportunity for the public to participate," he said.
Putu Suwitra for the event organizing committee said that the event was the culmination of previous events held by the municipality during the year, including Denpasar Old Town Memories, Serangan Island Festival, Pekenan Lais Meseluk and Maha Bhandana Prasadha.
"Denpasar Festival provides greater room for artists to express their ideas, as well as entrepreneurs to market their best products, especially handicrafts and textiles," he said.
Head of Denpasar Tourism Agency Putu Budiasa said the agency expected at least 10,000 visitors, both local people and tourists, to come to the festival.
The festival, to be opened by Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, will present a festival of local foods, and an exhibition of flowers and ornamental plants, as well as fashion and music shows.
The festival's venue will be divided into six zones, each of which will present different exhibition themes.
The first zone will present 80 culinary stands, a cooking demonstration by new iconic chef Farah Quinn, a bottle juggling act, and a suckling pig and betutu (traditional Balinese chicken) cooking competition.
The second zone themed *Denpasar Florikultura Nasional', will present 40 booths exhibiting various flowers and ornamental plants.
Denpasar Great Sale and Gajah Mada Fair in the third zone will present 60 handicrafts stands.
The fourth zone will exhibit 25 stands of various handmade textile products, as well as a demonstration of the creation of unique fabrics.
Dubbed as "the zone of creative community", the fifth zone will present exhibits and demonstrations from groups representing different hobbies and pass-times.
In the sixth zone, visitors can enjoy a range of art performances, music and sports competitions.
