Amid a slew of global crises, such as flare-ups in the Middle East and economic uncertainty caused by United States trade policy, Indonesia and Malaysia must band together as strategic neighbors in protecting their national interests and resolving common concerns, the two leaders said in a joint statement.
Just one month after hosting a leaders-level ASEAN meeting in Putrajaya, Anwar arrived in Jakarta on Friday with a delegation of five ministers to discuss key bilateral issues, the outcomes of the 46th ASEAN Summit and its various events, as well as the latest regional developments and global issues of mutual interest, according to a release from the Malaysian Foreign Ministry.
Anwar’s visit, which also served as preparation for the 13th annual consultation between the two neighbors slated for later this year, was made as a display of the two countries’ commitment to “deepen their close and long-standing bilateral relations at the highest level of leadership,” the statement added.
Prabowo welcomed Anwar at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base at noon, where the two leaders exchanged greetings on the tarmac. Friendship was on full display as Prabowo personally ushered Anwar to his limousine, with both leaders sharing the ride together en route to the State Palace in Central Jakarta.
