AKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo is planning to install the statue of Betawi hero Mohammad Hoesni Thamrin following criticisms on the settlement of “Barry”, the child Barrack Obama statue in the city.
“We would place the Thamrin statue near a police post, across the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle,” he told detik.com on Monday.
The date for the plan’s realization remains has not yet been set.
“If we build it now [reporters] would protest, saying it’s too expensive; a waste of money. Let’s just wait for the right time.”
The recent establishment of the 2-meter-tall Obama statue at Menteng Park, Central Jakarta, has drawn public resistance.
Some residents said the US president was not a local or national hero, and had thus had not earned the right to a city statue.
Thamrin, as a local leader, challenged Dutch occupation in the city in the early 19th century.
