Shorter: PLN to delay some projects if demand fails to rise as planned
State-owned electricity company PLN has stated it might opt to delay the implementation of some projects stipulated in its new long-term electricity business plan (RUPTL) in the case of an electricity oversupply.
PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo defended the move, saying the company has adopted a more dynamic approach, citing a need to anticipate unpredictable power demand. This was deemed better than previous procurement strategies, which he claimed were more “static” and unable to accommodate real-time changes.
“If the demand increases, we will work to fulfill it. If the demand drops, maybe [some] projects will be postponed a bit to avoid oversupply,” he said during the 2025-2034 RUPTL briefing in Jakarta on Monday.
“The point is that we will avoid our past electricity deficits and oversupply situations.”
The potential delay in projects if the country faces an electricity oversupply in the future has heightened experts’ concerns about the position of renewable energy projects, which are scheduled only for the second half of the 10-year plan in the latest RUPTL.
