ali Governor I Wayan Koster has revealed plans to put an end to vacation rental company Airbnb’s operations on the island, arguing that the online platform contributes little to local revenue.

“This will be reviewed, and we will propose stopping [Airbnb services],” Koster said during the 15th Regional Conference of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali in Denpasar on Wednesday, as reported by Antara.

Koster explained that digital accommodation platforms had affected Bali’s regional income, particularly because they do not contribute to locally generated revenue (PAD).

He noted that despite rising tourist arrivals, hotel occupancy rates had yet to show a corresponding increase, especially among hotels affiliated with PHRI Bali.

He added that more than 2,000 unlicensed hotels and villas needed to be regulated, while urging tourism industry players to assist the government in cracking down on accommodations that contribute minimally to local revenue.

“[Airbnb] does not fully support Bali’s local economy [...] not to mention the presence of illegal and unscrupulous operators. We will crack down on all of them, no mercy. We must be united, it’s not only the government’s responsibility but all of ours,” he said.
