Celebrity sex video scandals gather steam

W

hile videos allegedly featuring Peterpan lead singer Nazril “Ariel” Irham having sex with different celebrities made him a top Twitter topic on Tuesday, Jakarta Police said they were seeking those responsible for uploading the clips on the Internet.

“Our focus is to find out who uploaded the clips,” police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said.
“We will request help from [technology] experts to investigate the case,” Boy said.

He added that the police would charge those who uploaded the video with Criminal Code’s Article 292 for spreading pornography. The charge carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.

Boy also said police would use the controversial 2008 Information and Electronic Transaction Law to net the perpetrators.

However, he said police investigators had no immediate plans to question the people who allegedly appear in the video: Ariel and high-profile TV presenters Luna Maya and Cut Tari.

Last Friday, the first video made the rounds on several websites, including Facebook, allegedly showing Ariel having sex with current girlfriend Luna Maya. The link has since been taken down.

There are rumors on social networking site Facebook as well as Twitter that there would be more sex videos implicating Ariel with other celebrities.

On Tuesday, the term Ariel Peterporn, a play on his name, band and the sex tapes, hovered at the top of Twitter’s trending topics, surpassing the topic of the soon-to-be-launched iPhone 4, following the release of a video allegedly featuring Ariel and Cut Tari.

Earlier on Monday, the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) prohibited local media from broadcasting the video saying that the clips were pornographic.

“That would mean the media deliberately helped disseminate [pornography],” KPI head Dadang Rachmat was quoted as saying by news portal tempointeraktif.com.

Earlier, Sancoyo Antarikso, the spokesman of PT Unilever Indonesia, which signed Luna Maya and Ariel for Lux advertisements,  said the company had received a written statement from the couple saying the video had been doctored, and that it was not them in the clips.

Unilever said they would meet with Luna Maya and Ariel before deciding the future of their cooperation, but the Lux TV ad has not aired since early this week. Luna had been appearing in ads with Ariel.

Luna is also an ambassador for the World Food Program, while Cut Tari endorses Sharp air conditioners.
The clips have prompted Jakarta councilor Igo Ilham of the Islam based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) to call for raids on pornography in schools to thwart the dissemination of explicit material among students.

“There have to be raids as the clips could encourage students to follow suit,” Igo, who chairs House Commission E overseeing social and public welfare, was quoted as saying by news portal detik.com.
