aton Bagaskara has a personal rule that he will not perform on the weekend. But even if he has to, he always bring his kids along.
The lead singer of KLa Project, a multi-platinum band popular in the 1980s and 1990s, legendary for their pop gems such as Yogyakarta and Tak Bisa ke Lain Hati (Can’t Turn Away from You), said that he tried his best to spend his Sundays with his children.
For people who work in the entertainment industry like me, we often have to work on weekends. We are at times offered to perform at a gig, be a guest on a television program or a guest speaker of a talk show.
However, I always try to find time to be with my family on Sundays and spend special moments with them.
Eating out for lunch is a must on Sunday. We will head down to the kids’ favorite restaurants. My three kids are given the freedom to decide which restaurants they want to go to. They get to pick the restaurant.
While having lunch, we talk about our activities during the week.
After lunch, we ask the kids what they want to do. They can go to bookstores or buy new clothes. My youngest child always wants to spend time in the gaming arcade. I try to meet their demands. The most important thing is that we do things together on that special day.
In the afternoon we do sports. We usually play table tennis. Table tennis is my favorite sport and I have bought one table for our house.
I encourage them to do sports as physical exercise is important, playing video games all the time is unhealthy. I think introducing sports to my children at an early age is really important for their growth.
Sometimes I take my kids to work on the weekend. But I always make sure they will be comfortable. I don’t like it when my kids have to wait for me backstage during my performance. It is better if they can sit and watch my performance with the audience. This way, they can appreciate my music and my job as a musician.
In spite of my busy schedule with my kids, I try to find time for my wife. Sometimes we go out after 10 p.m. when the kids are asleep. During the week, we have a commitment to always be at home before 10 p.m. If one of us is out of town, we communicate by phone every evening.
