Ambon has another Indonesian Idol

E

licohen “Igo” Christellgo Pentury has been crowned Indonesian Idol 2010, the second Idol from Ambon, Maluku, after Mike Prabawa Mohede won the singing contest five years ago.

With the support of fans in his hometown and at the contest’s venue in a newly-built shopping mall in Jakarta, Igo walked away with the title by beating fellow contestant Skolastika Citra Kirana.

Earlier, Ambon officials and celebrities expressed support for Igo. Ambon Mayor MJ. Papilaja urged residents, including civil servants, to send text messages voting for the singer, the mayor’s official website reported. The winner was determined by the number of votes sent by the audiences via text messages.

Both Igo, 16, and Citra, 17, from Yogyakarta placed well with the four judges during the result show late Saturday. However, as predicted by judges Agnes Monica and Erwin Gutawa, Igo won the coveted title and a recording contract.

The other judges, Anang Hermansyah and Rossa, had to accept the fact that their pick Citra lost a tight battle — as revealed by host Daniel Mananta.

“I’m very grateful for this win. I promise that you will still see the same humble Igo in the future,” Igo told the audience that packed the Central Park mall in West Jakarta after the announcement. “This has been a wonderful experience, a learning process to be a superstar,” he added.

Igo had previously expressed his pride in representing Maluku, saying that his win would be dedicated to all Maluku people. Citra had expressed hopes to be the first finalist from Yogyakarta to win the competition.

“Win or lose, it doesn’t matter —I only want to give the best and let God do the rest,” Citra said at a recent press conference.

Both Citra and Igo were consistent throughout the sixth season of Indonesian Idol, with Citra enchanting the audience with her jazz-influenced performances, and Igo warming up the stage with his pop numbers.

During the finale on July 31, each performed four songs — including duets with other musicians. Igo collaborated with Zigaz band, while Citra shared the stage with jazz newcomer Dira Sugandi.
